They envision a community that thrives by living sustainably, focusing on principles like smart urban planning, waste minimization, protecting natural assets, and reinvigorating the democratic process. Founded in 2007 and registered as a non-profit society in Alberta, ReThink Red Deer combines social and environmental aims with business approaches, using a social enterprise model to fund projects that inform citizens and contribute to the common good. Their partnership with the Red Deer Polytechnic Green Campus initiative exemplifies their commitment to creating a sustainable future.
Red Deer polytechnic
Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) is at the forefront of renewable energy research and education. Home to the Energy Innovation Centre (EIC), it's a crucial part of RDP's broader Alternative Energy Initiative. The EIC actively fosters the understanding and awareness of emerging clean technologies among various stakeholders, from industry and business to residents and RDP students.
RDP’s commitment to sustainable energy is exemplified by the Alternative Energy Initiative, established in 2019. This initiative saw the installation of over 4,000 solar photovoltaic panels across campus and a 1 MW combined heat and power (CHP) unit. The Alternative Energy Lab (AEL) was also established through this initiative which serves as a hub for research, teaching, and data analysis aimed at removing barriers to alternative technology adoption.
By delivering hands-on learning, training, applied research, and innovation opportunities while reducing its carbon footprint, RDP is actively advancing its Green Campus Master Plan in its quest to become a net zero institution.
