Our Storey:

Sol Invictus Energy Services began with a problem we faced ourselves.

More than a decade ago, my husband Jesse and I were planning to build our own home in Central Alberta. We wanted a high-performance home that would be comfortable, efficient, and able to support our family during winter power outages and other disruptions. At the time we did not know the term “resiliency,” but that was exactly what we were trying to achieve.

We explored everything from Earthships to Passive House design, but we could not find anyone in our region who could help us build the type of home we envisioned. At the same time, I was completing my Master’s in Environmental Management while Jesse was working in construction. We decided to bridge the gap ourselves. I pursued certifications in energy advising and Passive House design, and together we general-contracted and built our own high-performance home using local trades. The first Passive Solar, Net Zero Home in Central Alberta!

That experience revealed a larger opportunity. Around the same time, Alberta’s building code introduced energy modelling as a pathway for compliance, and many builders needed help navigating the new requirements. Sol Invictus began by providing energy modelling and consulting to local builders and has since expanded across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia, supporting projects ranging from code compliance to Net Zero and deep energy retrofits.

Sol Invictus was originally conceived as a social enterprise during my graduate studies. We became a Certified B Corporation, reflecting our commitment to improving both environmental outcomes and the quality of housing in our region. Alongside project work, we collaborate with municipalities, builders, and organizations across the prairies to improve energy literacy and training within the building industry.

Our work has been recognized with a Young Entrepreneur Business of the Year award in 2020, and in 2026 one of our projects in the CHBA Towards Net Zero Deep Energy Retrofit program achieved the deepest retrofit in the program.

Today, Sol Invictus continues to provide building science and energy consulting across Western Canada while developing new digital tools to simplify energy code compliance and help the industry deliver better, more resilient homes.

We live in the “Thomas House Project” today and want to help others build their dream home - more comfortably, more efficient, more resilient and more thoughtful!
